It occurs to me that managing a social media campaign, or any other type of inbound marketing, has a lot in common with an exercise program. In other words, the more regularly you do it, the better it is for you.
We all know how important it is to have an exercise regimen in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise helps promote cardio health, strong muscles and bones, increased mobility as we age, and reduces injuries, especially for weekend warriors. It doesn't take hours and hours each day of strenuous work to accomplish this, just a few minutes and a conscious awareness to mix sedentary activities with mobile ones.
The same can be said of a social media campaign. Consistency is key. The exercise you do today, helps for today, and perhaps a bit of good effects lasts until tomorrow, but then you have to continue the process tomorrow. A little every day does more than a lot once in a while. Social media networks reward you for performance. Do little, and you'll be ignored.
Develop Some Goals
Like any fitness program, starting with some realistic goals in mind goes a long way toward realizing success. My current fitness goals are to lose 20 pounds and be able to cycle with my husband, an avid cyclist, by summer's end. So my plan will be to watch what I eat, and either walk or get on the bike at least 4 times a week.
Likewise, my current goals for Acumen Social are to gain at least 250 followers in my social media channels in the same period of time. My plan to accomplish that is to post 3 blog entries, 5 facebook entries and 10 tweets per week. I'll also find at least 1 blog, 1 Facebook page and 2 Tweeters per week to follow. And finally, I'll respond to every comment that I receive.
Let me know what your goals are, and we'll all be cheering ourselves on toward success.
