Learning to Think in a Social Media Context ... or, Making Your Work Count Twice

I don't know about you, but keeping your social media campaign going can cost a lot of time. I have a business to run, I have customers who need my help, and I like to have a life sometimes. And I have to come up with a steady stream of things to say on social media? It can feel daunting, until your realize that what you are doing, in the normal course of the day is rich in the stuff that feeds social media.

Here's a case in point. I have a website that is about some of the art and other non-programming projects that I do, acmfox.com. There's a blog that I created there, partly to demonstrate blogging incorporated into a website (rather than using a dedicated blogging platform), partly to express things about my craft. The problem is that while I do lots of things, I could never come up with the 'right thing' to blog about. Other bloggers sound so much more interesting. Why on earth would any one care to know what I'm up to, or what I'm thinking about?

In truth, there will always be some people who have no interest in what you have to say. On the other hand, there are always people who will be interested in the unique perspective you bring. Yes, I'm talking about you. Think about what you are doing during the normal course of the day. I'm pretty sure that you can come up with at least three ideas based on what you are doing at that moment in time that make for personal, insightful information.

Last weekend, I was avoiding all semblance of blogging on my neglected site as I painted the box you see illustrated here. About two thirds into that project, I realized, hey, I could be writing about this on my blog. It's kind of a silly story, but someone might find it interesting. So that's what I did. With one small project I got rid of an eyesore in my home and had an inspiration for a blog post. You can see it here: http://acmfox.com/blog/6-the-new-smoker.html. One project, two uses. That's what I mean by making your work count twice.

I imagine that you can come up with at least two ways to use the fruits of your labor. I'd love to hear your comments.
